Who will win the 2026 midterm elections? Polls and predictions
Democrats hope to take advantage of President Donald Trump’s falling popularity and reclaim the House and Senate from the Republicans
With less than six months until the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, both Democrats and Republicans are claiming momentum in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive political battles in recent history. Democrats are hoping to capitalize on growing dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s leadership, while Republicans argue their base remains energized enough to hold Congress.
Recent national polling shows Democrats narrowly leading the generic congressional ballot by roughly five to six percentage points, a sign that many voters are frustrated with inflation, foreign policy tensions, and ongoing political controversies surrounding the Trump administration. Several forecasts now suggest Democrats have a realistic path to reclaiming the House of Representatives, especially as many of the most competitive districts are currently held by Republicans.
Political analysts say history may also favor Democrats. The president’s party traditionally loses seats during midterm elections, and Trump’s approval ratings have slipped significantly in recent months amid economic concerns and criticism over immigration and foreign policy decisions. Some surveys now place his approval below 40 percent, creating fresh anxiety among Republican strategists.
The Senate, however, remains far more difficult for Democrats. Republicans currently hold structural advantages in several key battleground states, and Democrats must defend vulnerable seats in places like Georgia and Michigan while trying to flip Republican-held seats in Maine, North Carolina, and Texas. Early forecasts suggest the Senate could remain under Republican control even if Democrats perform strongly nationwide.
Key races are already drawing national attention. Maine Senator Susan Collins faces one of the toughest reelection fights of her career, while Georgia is expected to host another fiercely contested Senate showdown. Republican primaries in several states are also becoming major tests of Trump’s influence inside the GOP.
Despite Democratic optimism, experts warn the race is still highly unpredictable. Polling errors in recent elections, aggressive redistricting battles, and shifting voter turnout patterns could dramatically change the outcome. Republicans also continue to maintain strong support among older voters and conservative rural regions, factors that could help them outperform expectations once again.
For now, most analysts believe Democrats are favored to make gains in the House, while Republicans still have a slight edge in the Senate. But with months of campaigning still ahead, the 2026 midterms are increasingly being viewed as a national referendum on Trump’s second presidency — and the political future of both parties.
