For Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs right now, no news is just about the same as good news.
This offseason has brought distractions aplenty for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, with wide receiver Rashee Rice’s future uncertain amid legal woes and kicker Harrison Butker being roundly criticized for sharing homophobic and sexist views during a recent college commencement address.
However, one “good distraction” that the Chiefs can enjoy is the romance between star tight end Travis Kelce and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift — arguably the most famous musician on the planet. The relationship took flight last season, and Swift was on-site in Las Vegas as the Chiefs overcame the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. Mahomes, named the MVP of that overtime victory, recently reflected on how far Kelce and Swift have come — and whether he played a role in bringing them together.
Mahomes the matchmaker?
During his latest appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Mahomes admitted that he was the one who encouraged Kelce to pursue Swift in 2023 — and he, jokingly, asked for some of the credit in bringing together this power couple to end all power couples.
“I was like ‘dude, you should just go for it, just go for it,'” Mahomes recalled. “And you know Travis man, he does it, and he’s a great dude and I’m glad that it’s all worked out for the best.”
Mahomes said that he invited Kelce to his first Swift concert, and the future Hall of Fame tight end has had little trouble getting to see his partner’s shows since. He most recently appeared at her “Eras Tour” stop in Paris — the 87th show of her globe-spanning tour, fitting for a player whose #87 jersey will someday be retired by the Chiefs.
Travis has been the most supportive boyfriend Taylor could have asked for in other ways, too. He talked her up at the recent Kelce Jam event in Kansas City and ranked his favorite songs, while Swift traversed thousands of miles to attend 13 Chiefs games in 2023. Swifties — and the NFL, thanks to a ratings spike last fall — will be eagerly awaiting Swift’s presence when the Chiefs begin the 2024 season at Arrowhead Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens.
