JUST IN: Senator Ed Markey has called for President Trump to be removed from office under the 25th Amendment. But what is raising so many questions and concerns is Trump’s quick response to it.
Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has publicly called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office under the 25th Amendment, citing concerns over the president’s fitness to serve.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Markey urged, “Invoke the 25th Amendment,” accompanying the message with a screenshot of a New York Times article.
The call comes in response to reports that President Trump sent an unusual text message to Norway’s Prime Minister, linking his aggressive push to acquire Greenland from Denmark to not winning the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Trump reportedly indicated he felt less obligated to “think purely of Peace” due to the snub.
Markey’s demand has sparked widespread discussion, with other Democratic lawmakers, including Representatives Eric Swalwell, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, and Yassamin Ansari, echoing calls for the amendment’s invocation.
The 25th Amendment allows the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare a president unable to discharge duties, though it has never been used to remove a sitting president.
What has intensified scrutiny is President Trump’s swift response to the growing criticism.
In a brief statement, he dismissed the calls as “partisan nonsense” and defended his Greenland position as a matter of national security, while mocking opponents for overreacting to diplomatic correspondence.
Experts note that invoking the 25th Amendment remains a long shot, requiring broad support from Trump’s own administration.
The episode has further polarized Washington as debates over executive authority and mental fitness continue to dominate headlines.
